Build on KAACE’s Advocacy Success

1. Call your legislators and make an appointment. http://www.lrc.ky.gov/legislators.htm
2. Send confirmation of your appointment to KAACE at Camilla.kramer@jefferson.kyschools.us so we can track our potential impact.
3. Take the following materials with you: The KYAE Profile: http://goo.gl/vD2e7 (we will have copies in the cafeteria as well) Local adult education stats Bring a student, if possible
4. Meet the KAACE Board and other colleagues in the Capitol Annex Cafeteria before or after your meeting on February 23rd.
5. KAACE will deliver a small First Aid Kit to each Senator and Representative to remind them that “budget cuts never heal”. These will be sent with another copy of the KYAE Profile at the end of February. |
Advocacy Pays -
KAACE thanks you for your
support in recent advocacy efforts. Due to the diligence and hard work of
adult education supporters:
-
Adult Education funding has
been restored at the state level
-
Adult Education funding has
been restored at the national level
-
our
state and national representatives and senators are more aware of the
importance of adult education.
We've only just begun -
These recent efforts are just
the beginning of an ongoing advocacy campaign being led by
KAACE.
Why
is it important to continually participate in advocacy activities?
Policymakers
influence/decide:
-
who you recruit
-
what you teach, classroom
instruction, and program design
-
what data you collect
-
how much funding you
receive

Your students’ voices can be heard using the
advocacy-focused
letter-writing lesson plan.
Encourage your students to let
their voices be heard while providing them with valuable writing and
civics lessons! An easily replicable lesson plan and sample student letter
are available here.
Legislators and editors are
interested in what students have to say, and your students will love
having the opportunity to have their voices heard about a topic that is so
relevant to them.

Helpful Hints
- One-page
letters are best; include your name and contact information.
- If possible,
fax and mail your letter. (For members of Congress, fax your
letter to the D.C. office and mail your letter to the district
office.)
- Clearly state
your request in the subject line, just in case this is all that the
legislator sees. (Example: “Please increase Adult Education funding by
$5 million”)
- Have a
concise, one-sentence statement/request prepared when you call your
legislator. The more specific you are, the better. (Example: “I am
requesting the senator’s support of an increase of $5 million in Adult
Education funding.”)
- Your students’
voices are more valuable than those of you and your fellow adult
educators; get them involved.
